Empowering Tribal Health and Wellness: Our Work with the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes

Wichita Tribe Dept. of Health Spirit Run
One of my favorite projects that we’ve done is collaborating with the Department of Health and the Department of Nutrition for the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes.

Having lived in Oklahoma most of my life, learning more about our history is very important to me. The Wichita Tribe has been here for hundreds of years, and we were called in to help them rebuild their website, shoot videos for each of their departments, and manage their social media.

A couple of standout aspects of their Department of Nutrition and Department of Health projects were how we organized and designed the program information and resources on their website for anyone needing to use their department’s services. We gained a deep understanding of what they’re doing to keep their tribe healthy, ensuring great nutrition and education. It’s inspiring to see.

We had the opportunity to shoot videos of cooking classes where members of the Wichita Tribe prepared healthy foods that other members could enjoy, teaching all kinds of cool cooking techniques. We also filmed them making some of their traditional Wichita foods, which was really neat.

Another highlight was capturing video of the community garden they’re maintaining, where they’re growing fresh food onsite for the tribe. Any member can visit the garden, and they bank that food into a grocery store right on the premises of the Wichita Tribe’s administrative buildings. We also filmed their nutrition warehouse as part of this effort.

Yet another cool element was documenting what the Department of Health is doing to provide fitness opportunities for the tribe. We filmed the annual Spirit Run, a 5K that the Wichita Tribe and anyone in the community can participate in. It was such a fun, high-energy event where three or four generations of families could come out to run, walk, or support others. There were all kinds of festivities, including a cultural festival, music, and great Wichita food served at community meals. It was a delight to be a part of.
I’m really grateful for the opportunity to do this work for the Wichita Tribe for several reasons. Every time we’ve been there, it’s been inspiring to see what a tight-knit community they are, yet we always felt welcome. While filming some of the festivities, multiple people came up to check if I had enough to drink or eat, making sure I felt included. They’re such hospitable people and an absolute joy to work with.

We love working with health and wellness clients because the name Aqua Vita means “water of life.” For every client we serve, we aim to be the water of life to them, just as they are the water of life for their communities. The Wichita Tribe is no exception. They’re doing extraordinary things to make sure their members have plenty of opportunities to stay healthy, happy, and engaged through community events everyone can participate in and enjoy.
